Whole Body MRI – what can it detect? How accurate is it?
Whole-body MRI is a valuable screening tool. Combined with other examinations performed during your check-up, it helps spot abnormalities and informs us where to focus our attention. During the examination, we can receive an initial assessment of the vascular system, an image of neoplastic changes in the bone marrow and tissues, and help diagnose rheumatological diseases and musculoskeletal injuries.
However, we would like to strongly emphasise that this test does not give 100% certainty that the patient is healthy – such a method has not yet been invented. Whole-body magnetic resonance also has its limitations. This is a general examination that will help detect larger tumours (0.5 mm) and is helpful in diagnosing changes in the skeletal system. In the case of the initial phase of cancer development, there is a high probability that this examination will not detect the developing changes, due to their small size. That is why we also perform cancer marker blood tests, multiple ultrasounds etc.
Magnetic resonance imaging of the whole body is a diagnostic method that allows for the screening of the patient’s body. With this method, you can check your overall health. During the examination, we obtain visual images of the head, neck, chest, abdominal cavity (liver, bile ducts, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, abdominal aorta), pelvis, thighs and lower legs. This allows to detect of perceptible changes and thus accelerates further, detailed diagnosis of the Patient.
It is worth noting that all possible abnormalities detected during the Whole Body MRI examination require further selective diagnostics during more detailed USG, X-ray, CT, PET examinations or targeted MRI examinations, with the possible administration of a contrast agent.
In conclusion, Whole Body MRI is a screening method that shows a larger part of the body without harmful effects on the body (in patients who have no contraindications to perform an MR examination).
If you would like to have a detailed MRI scan of a specific anatomical part of the body, it’s recommended to book another scan, just with a focus on the anatomical part. You can either undergo it as a part of the package, or, if you would just need the MRI, you can book it as a separate appointment. You will not need a referral to have the MRI scan abroad.
Where does the check-up take place?
All examinations are performed at one of EuroTreatMed’s partner medical centres in Katowice, Poland. The clinic is a modern, accredited facility equipped with a Philips Ingenia 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, advanced diagnostic technology, and a team of English-speaking specialists.
It operates under strict EU medical standards and is experienced in caring for international patients. During your full health check-up abroad (in Poland) you will have the supervisor, who checks the plan, helps in getting to the appointments and keeps you informed about the next steps.
Are anaesthesia, biopsies, or histopathology included in the package?
Yes — both the gastroscopy and colonoscopy are performed under anaesthesia, and the anaesthesiologist’s service is included in the package. The full health check-up price covers the histopathological testing of a single change found during the examinations. However, if polyps are found and removed, the removal and histopathological testing are billed separately, as costs depend on the number and type of samples.
