What is Peyronie’s disease and how it is treated?

Peyronie’s disease is a noncancerous condition which results from fibrous scar tissue called plaque, that forms inside the penis. That cause disfiguring, bothersome bend in a man’s erect penis which results in painful erections and might be embarrassing for men. Penises vary in shape and size, and having a curved erection does not testify of a Peyronie’s disease, if the Peyronie’s symptom occurs, the bend is significant and pain might be very severe.

Because of the curves and pain as well as difficulty in maintaining the erection, men often avoid having sex and intimate situations. Due to the scar tissue growth and curves, the Peyronie’s disease also can cause penile shortening.

Unfortunately, Peyronie’s disease rarely disappears/cures on its own, and even usually will get worse in time. Symptoms may develop slowly or appear overnight. When the penis is soft, at the beginning you will not see the problem.

Most of Peyronie’s specialists begin the treatment with pharmaceutical therapy, usually pills or creams, however, this kind of treatment efficacy is not satisfactory. There is no dedicated oral or cream medication for the Peyronie’s condition.

You will speak with your surgeon during the obligatory pre-operative consultation, and discuss possible options.
