Total Knee Replacement abroad for Canadians – 2-week package with daily physio in Poland for 60% Canadian price

Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition in people above 50 years of age. Our cartilage becomes less resilient, the repetitive stress (kneeling, squatting, lifting), higher body mass or joint injuries lead to quicker wearing off the joint. The knee starts being painful, stilll, swollen. You limit your daily activities, have difficulty walking

Luckily, it’s not a sentence, and you can still get your active and pain-free life back! Knee replacement surgery began gaining popularity in the 1970s. By the 1980s and 1990s, total knee replacement became a common and standardized operation worldwide. Advances in materials (like titanium alloys and high-density polyethylene) and surgical techniques have greatly improved outcomes.

Knee replacement in Poland is most often performed when conservative treatments no longer bring relief, and joint damage significantly limits daily life. Canadians chose to have a total knee replacement abroad (in Poland) due to the affordable cost, comfortable physiotherapy packages and no waiting times.

Waiting times for a knee replacement in Canada

In Canada today, while the target is ~6 months (≈ 26 weeks) from readiness to surgery for knee replacements, many patients in practice wait longer than that, often 7-10 months or more depending on province, hospital and backlog. In 2022, only 59% of knee replacement patients (hip & knee combined) in Canada received their surgery within the benchmark of 182 days.

Delaying knee replacement can lead to worsening joint damage, muscle weakness, and loss of mobility, making recovery more difficult. It can also increase pain, reduce quality of life, and negatively affect overall physical and mental health.

Cost of a private knee replacement in Canada:

The common idea to skip the waiting lists and receive a higher quality of care, is to have the total knee replacement privately. Here’s a rough estimate of how much is a private knee replacement in Canada — and what you might pay for related consultations and physiotherapy. Note: these are approximate ranges and actual costs can vary widely depending on province, clinic, surgeon, implant type, and rehabilitation plan.

  1. Private knee replacement surgery: Typically around CAD $20,000 to $30,000 or more.
  2. Consultation before surgery: You might expect the cost in the CAD $150–$300+ range
  3. Consultation/follow-ups after surgery: Follow-up surgeon visits might cost similarly than the pre-surgery consultation
  4. Physiotherapy: Many clinics charge about CAD $80-$150 per session for a follow-up visit.

Estimated total cost for a private knee replacement in Canada with physiotherapy (Let’s pick mid-range values for an example):

  • Surgery: CAD $25,000
  • Pre-surgery consult: CAD $250
  • Post-surgery follow-up consult (let’s assume 1 visit): CAD $200
  • Physiotherapy (12 sessions at CAD $120 each): CAD $1,440
  • Initial physio assessment: CAD $130

Estimated total: 25,000 + 250 + 200 + 1,440 + 130 = ≈ CAD $27,020

Depending on higher or lower rates, this could easily range from ~CAD $22,000 to CAD $35,000+.

Canadians are going to Poland for a private knee replacement

You still have another choice with no compromise on the healthcare level. Have you ever thought about going for a knee replacement from Canada to Poland?

Did you know that for a cost of approximately 15,750 Canadian Dollars*, you can have a private knee replacement. 14-day stay in the hospital, an en-suite room and full a la carte board, high-quality implant, daily physio and 24/7 medical care? It accounts for approximately 60% of the surgery and physiotherapy cost in Canada itself, not mentioning the benefit from staying in the hospital for the full two weeks.

There are some people who have already chosen this path.

We have recorded a talk with Farley, who visited us from Canada for a knee replacement abroad (in Poland) and during his stay decided to have the second knee also replaced.

*The final package cost always depends on the medical team evaluation and differs based on the Patient’s age, health conditions etc.

The interview transcript is in the bottom of the page.

I was scared being in another country for surgery but all the staff at the hospital were extremely welcoming and professional .My surgery was a huge success and the 2 week stay for physio and after care went above and beyond . The food was exceptional and having my husband stay with me was comforting . There was 24hr care for the 2 weeks .
There was a cute garden to go sit outside and read .
We were transported back to the airport and I can’t thank everyone for all the care and support.

Knee Replacement in Poland from Canada

I’ve been home a week now following my treatment and I’d like to give you my feedback on EuroTreatMed

I was initially apprehensive at the thought of travelling abroad for a knee replacement, however, dealing with Maja at EuroTreatMed quickly gave me full confidence that it was the right thing to do. All of my queries were answered extremely quickly, my MRI scans were reviewed within 24 hours and the lead time to booking the op was very quick. I also found peace of mind with the video reviews on the website.

From initial transportation from the airport, to arriving at the hospital late at night there was somebody available to make sure I was greeted and looked after. The pre assessments and op happened within a day and I was quickly on my road to recovery. I can’t speak highly enough of the surgeon, his team and the nurses who attended to me and made sure I had everything I needed during my two weeks stay. The nurses seemed to sense, even during the night, when I needed pain relief or anything else..

The physio’s quickly had me on my feet and made sure I had an exercise programme to follow, they are clearly experienced in the needs of post op patients. I had 12 days of physio before heading home, this I believe is a big advantage to having an op at home. I felt this initial recovery period was essential and has set me up to move forward in confidence.

I would recommend EuroTreatMed to anybody looking to go abroad for surgery. I would like to extend my thanks to Maja and everyone who helped care for me.

Interview with Farley, who came to Poland for a bilateral knee replacement from Canada. Transcript:

Maja:

Thank you so much for agreeing to have this interview — it’s very valuable for me and I hope for people who will watch it, because it’s quite extraordinary.
You came from Canada, and you had a bilateral knee replacement here, right?
So, I just want to ask some questions and speak about the experience — how you see it.
So tell me, where in Canada are you from? And maybe let’s start with the travel arrangements.
How did you travel? How long did it take? And do you think the burden of the travel was worth coming here?

Farley:

Well, definitely it was worth it. I come from Western Canada, Alberta Province, which is just east of British Columbia, in the capital city of Edmonton.
It’s around 22 hours to get here — two plane changes — but it was absolutely worth it.
In Canada, you get on a waiting list to get a knee replacement, and I’d been on that list for about a year and a half with no end in sight.
And then, when the first operation is done, you’re on another waiting list for the second knee.
The longer you wait to fix your bad knee, the more pressure you put on the other knee, and that can cause hip problems too.
I had two bad knees — bone on bone — so I came here expecting to do just one knee.

Maja:

What made you decide to come to Poland?
Since we know many people from Canada go to Mexico or India for surgery, how did you decide on Poland?

Farley:

The main reason was your aftercare.
I arrived on a Sunday, had the operation on Monday, and then had two weeks of aftercare — physio every day, people helping, managing pain — and it wasn’t that bad.
It was really the aftercare — no one else offered that, even in Canada.
There, you pay more or similar prices, but you’re sent home the next day with no rehab.
Here, you stay for therapy, which is the most important part of recovery.
I spent three weeks in total — two for the second knee, three for the first — and it was well worth it.

Maja:

You mentioned that during the second operation, you didn’t have a “good” leg to rely on — how did that feel?

Farley:

That was my concern, but the first knee healed so well that therapy was easy.
The second one is still fresh — about a week old — but I’m confident it’ll be fine.
Physical therapy is key. You have to communicate with the team, tell them how you feel, and they adjust the plan.
I would totally recommend coming to Poland for a knee replacement  just for the aftercare.

Maja:

Have you ever been to Poland before?

Farley:

No, though my wife and I had considered it before COVID.
I’ve seen videos, but this is my first time here.

Maja:

How would you compare this medical facility and level of care to what you’d get closer to home?

Farley:

It’s hard to compare — I’ve only had one other major surgery, a hip replacement in Canada.
If you break something, you get treated immediately.
But for elective surgeries like knee replacements, you wait — and wait.
The hip surgery in Canada was good, but the waiting system for knees is the problem.

Maja:

What surprised you most about this experience — positive or negative?

Farley:

A pleasant surprise was the quality of care.
Everyone — physiotherapists, nurses, doctors — genuinely cared.
They checked on me, explained things, asked questions.
In Canada, it’s different now — staff shortages, time pressure — so this personal care was a very nice surprise.

Maja:

And how do you feel after having two surgeries? Ready to go home?

Farley:

Yes, I’m ready for the next phase.
Now it’s just continuing physio at home.
I was surprised by how little pain I had — not pain-free, but far less than expected.
And the medication here is balanced — not too heavy.
Maybe I felt less post-op pain because I had so much before surgery.

Maja:

I remember we had some logistical issues with the payment at first — you thought you could pay by credit card remotely.
Could you share how you resolved it?

Farley:

Yes — we just needed to set up the credit card limit properly.
In Canada, we’re used to paying over the phone, but here you need the physical card.
Once I had my card linked to the right account, it worked fine.
Communication goes both ways — we had to ask the right questions, and you assumed we understood.
So, the lesson: bring a physical card!

Maja:

Do you have any recommendations for other Canadians who consider coming to Poland for a knee replacement surgery?

Farley:

Do your research, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend coming here.
And if possible, stay in the hospital rather than a hotel.
Being on-site is much easier and safer — no commuting, no logistics stress.
Everything’s in one place: hospital, therapy, care, food.

Maja:

Speaking of food — that’s something people often ask about.

Farley:

Yes! That was a big surprise — the food was amazing.
You get meals from two local restaurants — scallops, halibut, salmon, steak tartare — nothing like hospital food in Canada.
It’s something you actually look forward to every day, like an all-inclusive holiday.
The portions were huge, and the quality was incredible.

Maja:

That’s wonderful to hear. Thank you so much — I think we can finish here.

Farley:

Thank you for taking the time — and now, it’s time for my lunch!
