My opinion about the Mazan clinic and weight loss treatment

Dr. Kowalski is a great doctor with a calling who explains all doubts and questions. My mother and I were patients of Dr. Kowalski (bariatric surgery in both cases). The doctor approach to our case made me feel comfortable with the choice of a surgeon. He often visits patients during his stay in the clinic and always answers calls. He always calmly translated and answered thousands of my questions and doubts. He advises on what to work after surgery, what medications to continue and what to supplement. If you’re looking for a good surgeon, look no further – Dr. Kowalski is a doctor you can fully trust. I will add that I came from the USA for the surgery because of the excellent opinions. If I had to choose a surgeon again, I would no doubt go to dr. Grzegorz Kowalski.

What symptoms may qualify me to the weight loss surgery abroad such as a gastric bypass or a sleeve gastrectomy?

Each case for the weight loss surgery in Poland is considered individually but there are some general guidelines which are used to determine suitability for bariatric surgery:

The main criteria as defined by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (known as NICE) are:weight loss surgery abroad

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or above. What exactly is BMI? Is a measure of body size. It combines a person’s weight with their height. The results of a BMI measurement can give an idea about whether a person has the correct weight for their height. The score over 30 defines you as ‘obese’. It tends to be a BMI of 30 plus an obesity-related condition or 40 and upwards (morbidly obese).
  • You are between 18 and 60 years old
  • You have been obese for the last five years despite trying all non-invasive forms of losing weight and managing your obesity problems. This means you tried dietary plans, exercising, weight loss medication. You will need to prove that you have tried these but without any success – you did not lose weight or you did but with a strong yo-yo effect.
  • There is a risk that you will suffer from an obesity-related illness such as diabetes, joint degeneration etc. now or in the future.
  • You must be fully committed to the aftercare programme with all of your strong will and belief. You are prepared to make lasting changes to your current lifestyle such as following a set diet and exercise routine and taking vitamin/mineral medication if required.

The criteria listed above may seem strict but are specified to give you the best results, protect your health and as a help for the surgeon. The weight loss surgery abroad is the first step, in your new, healthier life, but you must be truly devoted to the change. Our specialist such as a psychologist, dietician, doctors, assistants will help you, but you will need to be persistent in your journey. The outcomes could be brilliant, Patients after the bariatric surgery such as a gastric sleeve can lose up to 70% of their current weight!

Depending on your circumstances, a particular procedure such as a gastric band might be a more suitable option than gastric bypass.

What are the benefits and results of bariatric surgery in Poland, such as a gastric bypass or a sleeve gastrectomy?

The main and most awaited result is, of course, a  weight loss. You may expect the loss between 60-70%, sometimes 80. It depends on the procedure type as well as your consequence in following the post-op rules. You will be looking more natural, more slim, more attractive, you will feel more active, it will be easier to move, walk, travel. You will become more socially active, as obesity is a trigger which stops us from social life. You will reduce the possibility of developing obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes type 2, joint degeneration, atherosclerosis, heart diseases. Most likely, your weight loss surgery abroad will also have a great impact on your life expectancy. With a normal weight, your body will be healthier. In general, you will have a new life quality.

obesity treatment abroad

The first 12 months will bring you the biggest change in weight loss. Then your body will adjust to lower calories intake, and the change will get a little slower. Finally, your organism will find a balance and stabilise in perfect weight.

What are the risks of the weight loss surgery abroad?

Complications can happen although they are uncommon: however, it’s as well to take these into account before making a decision. Before the operation, you will have a chance to speak with your doctor and go through all of the risks involved. You will also receive the Patient Consent Form file, where all of the information regarding the procedure will be explained.

The first risk is involved with the general aneasthesication – General anaesthesia is, essentially, a medically induced coma, not sleep. Drugs render a patient unresponsive and unconscious. They are normally administered intravenously or inhaled. Under general anaesthesia, the patient is unable to feel pain.

The second risk is involved with the surgical procedure itself, such as blood clots, infection. There are also some risks involved with a particular procedure, but those will be explained by the doctor when choosing the best treatment option. For example, after the gastric band procedure abroad, there is a risk that the band will slip out.

How do I prepare for obesity treatment abroad?

If your surgery date is getting closer, you need to remember about the special, preoperative diet. Before the weight loss surgery in Poland you will be recommended a dietary restrictions by the medical staff of our clinic. Usually, 7 days before the procedure, the patient is obliged to follow a liquid diet and avoid drinking alcohol. It is vital to remember that before the obesity treatment surgery abroad a DIET USE IS NECESSARY FOR YOUR SAFETY AND TO AVOID COMPLICATIONS DURING AND AFTER TREATMENT.
Below are the only products that you can eat:

  • Nutridrinks or Cubitans (high-protein and high-energy nutrient ready to drink to buy at the pharmacy) instead of meals – 3-5 times a day,
  • Still mineral water,
  • Herbal tea
  • Natural yoghurt in limited quantities (0% fat).

DO NOT CONSUME ANY SOUPS (EVEN CHICKEN BULION OR VEGGIE SOUP), FRIED VEGETABLES AND FRUIT, FRUIT OR VEGETABLE COCKTAILS.

The second very important thing before your weight loss surgery abroad is the smoking restriction. We recommend that you stop smoking or using chewing tobacco prior to your surgery. This will lower your risk of complications with weight-loss surgery. This can be a good opportunity for you to kick the habit for good.

Before your arrival, our consultant will help you decide what to pack with you to the hospital, which medication you should stop taking before the procedure etc.

What are the advantages of using adjustable gastric band?

a) Expected results, benefits

If exercising, changing your lifestyle to more healthy, using restrictive diet are not leading to a satisfying result, and what is more, you are suffering from obesity with BMI (body mass index) above 35, you may be a good candidate for adjustable gastric band surgery. This procedure reduces the amount of food that is held in the stomach; it also helps in weight loss of 40 – 50 %. Your stomach does not have to be cut, what results in shorter recovery and stay in the hospital. The procedure is reversible and has the lowest intraoperative rate of complications among other bariatric surgeries. It is also recommendable due to lowest risk of mineral and vitamin deficiencies.

About the gastric band surgery abroad procedure
The procedure is an effective way to significant weight reduction. The band makes your stomach smaller, and eating the just little amount of food can already satisfy your hunger. The size of your band can be adjusted (the doctor fills it up with sterile saline using injection port placed under your skin). During the surgery the band is not filled – your stomach needs to get used to the foreign body. During first two months, you should not eat foods that are hard to digest, as the stomach cramps may dislocate the band. Despite the band, food will be digested and absorbed normally. The whole surgery process takes about 90 minutes.
Treatment Schedule of the gastric band surgery abroad
On the surgery day, you will not be able to eat or drink. You will get IV (for anaesthesia, antibiotics and fluids) and compressions stockings, to prevent blood clots. You will get some medication to relax and get rid of anxiety, and after wheeling you into the operating room, you will be put under general anaesthesia. The surgeon will insert the band over your stomach and prepare the subcutaneous port. You will wake up half an hour after surgery, and the nurse will make sure, that you feel comfortable.
What are the side effects of adjustable gastric band surgery in Poland?

d) Potential side effects of the gastric band surgery abroad

The gastric band surgery is considered as safe and efficient, but as with all types of surgical intervention, it carries the risk of complications. Some of them are severe such as internal bleeding, blood clots (risk of blood clots is decreased by wearing compression socks or receiving an anti-blood-clot injection). For patients with BMI above 50, the risk of complications increases, not only caused by the procedure itself, but also with general anaesthesia. There is also a possibility that the following may occur: mechanical problems with the band, band slippage or erosion, the band requires strict adherence and diet what may also be difficult to maintain.

Full Recovery Time after the gastric band treatment abroad
Right after the procedure you will feel pain at the site of the surgery, which should pass within a few days. For the first day, you will be allowed only to drink small amounts of liquid. Gradually small portions of more constant food will be added to your diet. You can get back to your normal activities within four to six weeks. After this time your stomach should be healed enough to adjust the band by injecting the saline. Sometimes the band may be too tight (and may cause vomiting) or too loose (you may not lose weight), and it may take a number of sessions until the perfect adjustment is reached. An average weight loss by the Patients with stomach band is approximately 0.5 -2.2 Pounds a week.
Patient preparation for the gastric band operation abroad:
The most important step in your weight loss surgery preparation is changing your habits, about how to eat, exercise and about your lifestyle. Patients who started to lose weight before the surgery are more likely to lose more after, and to experience fewer complications during the procedure. After making a decision about undergoing the bariatric surgery, you should try to begin eating for your health, and not for pleasure. You should get used to smaller portions, and prepare your body for less food – that is why you should plan them carefully, to supply your body with necessary minerals and vitamins. Make sure your daily diet contains lots of proteins. Eat slower, watch the portion sizes, and chew bites carefully. Reduce the amount of coffee, stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Remember about the importance of physical activity, try to exercise more. Two weeks before surgery you should eat like you have already had the procedure done. The day before, you will be probably asked not to drink or eat anything.

To diagnose if the Patient can be qualified to a bariatric surgery following tests should be done:

  • Blood group and RH factor
  • Complete blood count
  • Biochemical tests (sodium, potassium, glucose, creatinine, coagulation APTT, INR, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, calcium, iron, AST, ALT, total bilirubin, TSH, fT4, HBsAg, HCV)
  • Urinalysis
  • Measurement of height and weight – BMI rating (you should have BMI index above 40, but if you are diagnosed with another serious health condition like high blood pressure or diabetes BMI 35 will be enough). Adults with diabetes type 2 can be considered with bariatric surgery with BMI over 30.
  • EKG, Spirometry, Panendoscopy, UKG, abdominal ultrasound.

Also, consultations with specialists should be done:

  • Internal medicine doctor
  • Psychologist (psychiatrist)
  • Laryngologist
  • Endocrinologist
  • Dentist

If the patient is unlikely to lose weight despite a long time of implementation other methods like diet, exercises, pharmacological treatment, and still with BMI index strongly exceeded, he/she may be a good candidate for the bariatric surgery. Before giving consent to this procedure, Patient should be well informed about how life may change after the operation – limited food choices, side effects, lifelong healthy lifestyle and physical activity, intake of vitamins, minerals.
